The full-scale of the first Pacific cultural exchange festival, with the islands of Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia, received an agreement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Pacific Islands Center, the Pacific Society, Japanese Hawaiian Music Association, Association of Samoan Culture-Japan, Ku’uleinani Polynesian Culture School and Meiji University. It was also kindly supported by companies such as Yomiuri Shimbun (a big newspaper company), Tokyu Groups and various cultural arts organizations. There were participation based on the volunteer spirit of many people from all over Japan, a big group from Hawaii and Tahiti that made us able to hold the festival this time.

There were approximately 500 audiences gathered for the open lecture at Meiji University. The lecture on July 22nd (the first day of the festival) about Polynesian culture, music and dances by the members of the Hawaiian Polynesian Culture Center received a big popularity.

We were blessed with an excellent weather that leaded to approximately 50,000 people gathering in Komazawa Olympic Park on the second and the third day of the festival.

We had the participation of about 40 Japanese groups from Kyushu, the earthquake stricken area of Fukushima and other parts of Japan, as well as some members of the Polynesian Culture Center of Hawaii and New Zealanders who are residing in Japan. They danced a total of 130 numbers of Hula, Ori Tahiti, Samoan, Maori and Chamorro dances at an outdoor stage at the center of the park from 10:00 am to 8:00pm for 2 consecutive days.

Japanese traditional dances, Japanese drums, Syamisen music and Yosakoi dances were shown as the cultural contribution part of the host country, Japan.

As for the spectacle show inside the gymnasium, there were splendid Hawaiian music and singing voices of luxurious guest singers who were Na Hoku Hanohano music awards winners from Hawaii. They attracted and were applauded by huge audiences, many beautiful fascinating Hula were danced by a great number of people. There was a 40-minute Tahitian dance show. It was a reproduction of Heiva Tahiti participated by more than 100 dancers of Mahanaotera and the powerful drumming of the musicians from Tahiti. The show sent a hot wind of Tahiti spirit into the Gym.

The workshops for the Polynesian dances and musical instruments were courses and a cultural exchange at the same time - “Watch it and touch it!”. The purpose is to experience the production of the craft. It was performed and carried out satisfactorily.

The center park was provided with display booths of Micronesian Embassy, Palau Embassy and the Pacific Islands Center. An introduction of islands of the Pacific was performed. We invited some product producers /manufacturers from the earthquake stricken area, and around 40 stores/shops raised the atmosphere of the festival plus 13 kitchen cars pleased people by their rich foods and drinks. .

What made this festival successful was because of the devoted cooperation between each of the performers, visitors, staffs and many volunteers; we express great and sincere appreciation. The feeling was bonded into one that everyone wanted to help, support and cooperate with East Japan great earthquake disaster reconstruction aid.

I believe that a deep bonding between participants of the cultural exchange of the Pacific islands has started with this festival. I hope that I widen a ring of this new friendship more and pray for it as I develop the interchange of a long-standing culture.

We will let you know of the outcome on the WEB as soon as we complete the settlement of the accounts. I am pleased to inform you that the first PCAF was safely and successfully accomplished because of the great cooperation from all of you. Thank you, Mahalo nui loa, Mauruuru roa, Kapai, Fafetai.

Pacific Cultural Arts Festival
The purpose of the Pacific Cultural Arts Festival is to directly touch on the art and culture of the Pacific, to share the knowledge and to provide the opportunity for cultural exchanges between Japan and the Pacific Islands.

The pacific has divided into three districts by the culture and geography, it has influenced in a long history each other and built up the unique culture. And, we can see many similarities in the japanese culture.
■Micronesia a group of more than 2,000 small islands in the west Pacific Ocean
■Melanesia a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean, northeast of Australia
■Polynesia The north of the Pacific Ocean is islands that exist in the triangle with which Hawaii and the east connect Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and New Zealand in the south.
